NemesisFiles by Joe-Singleton
NemesisFiles
So, in Adventure #346, young writer Jim Shooter introduced some new Legionnaires, Karate Kid, who learned all his skills through practice and hard work, Ferro Lad, who was supposed to be the first Black Legionnaire, but the editors weren't ready for that, Princess Projectra and Nemsis Kid. Except for Karate Kid, I don't recall seeing analogs for these characters in the Imperial Guard. I based Onslaught's costume on Karate Kid's original brown gi. I spent awhile looking for an alien race in the Marvel Universe with metallic bodies, I came upon the Autocrons, and thought they could fill the bill. He can't change to metal, but he's all metal and has superstrength. I figure he's a young Autocron exchange student, who jumped at the call. The Princess was easy to visualize. We know that super-powers can appear in the Shi'ar, Electron and Deathbird prove this, so I made her Shi-ar and I figure she's a distant cousin of Lilandra and her brother. Her powers might keep her from ascending the throne, but she can still serve the Empire.
And there there's the nemesis...I call hiim Contra, and nobody knows (except us, obviously) that he's a Skrull. A Super-Skrull, to be precise, whose powers of adaptability have been amped up in such a way that he adapts powers to counter any force used against him.

Inevitable, I should say... by Joe-Singleton
Inevitable, I should say...
So, once I started down the road of reworking Legion of super-Heroes covers, using members of the Imperial Guard, it was inevitable that I'd do the very first one, Adventure #247. I wish I could have found a font more like the Adventure logo font, but hey, this works. I figured the lightning geek would be more likely to be the mean boy, so I let him do the talking. The Shi-ar birdfolk always seem more taciturn...except for Deathbird, of course.
I think I'll post one without the logos and lettering, to show off the alien cityscape in the windows.

More Imperial Guard fun by Joe-Singleton
More Imperial Guard fun
So...a long time ago, I came up with Gladiatrix, a younger cousin with the same powers as Gladiator.
I was always a fan of the Supergirl/Brainiac 5 'ship in the Legion comics, although, as with most brainy guys and hot cheerleader types, the relationship is mostly on Brainy's side. Kara was nice about it, but we all knew it was doomed.
I reworked Mentor's colors, here, because I just hate the green and orange suit.

Imperial Guard founders by Joe-Singleton
Imperial Guard founders
Assuming that these three analogs are the founders, I thought I'd play around with some younger versions of the characters. Tempest, as he was known in his first appearance, Oracle, and Electron. Having some fun, here.

Gladiator and the Imperial Guard by Joe-Singleton
Gladiator and the Imperial Guard
I based this on the cover of Superboy starring the Legion of Super-Heroes #217, which was the first issue I ever bought and the one that hooked me on wanting to draw comics. There's no direct analog to Mon-El in the Imperial Guard, so I subbed Smasher, for him in the cover image. A Kree commander seemed a good sub for the Khund warlord on Mike Grell's cover. The Kree's are a little less into the whole "leather-boy" culture, that Grell's Khunds.

I want to ask you what were your thoughts on Thor handing the hammer down to a woman and the Falcon becoming the new Captain America?

It will all depend on how it's done. I'm a big fan of passing torches and taking up legacies in heroic fiction, so if it's handled that way, it can be cool. If the Thor thing is another Beta-Ray Bill, that could be fun for awhile. I especially liked the Falcon in the second Cap movie, but I've always liked the mainstream Marvel U Falcon, too. Not so much the Ultimates version. Sam Wilson, as he's usually been written, would be a good Cap.

That being said, I worry that these things are done to create publicity and stir up controversy. For me, that's weak tea. Tell a good story with good characters.

I do agree that if it's all for publicity and controversy and nothing else, then things can go wrong and you're right that good stories and good characters can go a long way in the industry. but what's so sad is that the best, iconic characters are the only ones that can always sell the most no matter what, it's either them or bust.

Well, it's always possible that someone has figured out a really cool, interesting story involving a transgendered norse thundergod, but my experience tells me, that's not the way to bet. When you hear hoofbeats, think "horses", not "zebras". When Marvel and/or DC give one of their established characters a race/sex/sexual orientation change, I think "marketing gimmick", rather than "innovative way to revitalize the character!" That way, I'm never disappointed.

Thanks. Two days later, I wrecked my car, so being 51 is not starting out well. Thankfully, no one was injured, but my car is a total loss. I miss her.
